r/technology – Will Apple end the newsletter boom? How Mail Protection Privacy will force the email economy to adapt.

“The advertising industry has addicted itself to tracking, prioritizing bottom of the funnel metrics at the expense of great content and creative. It’s tragic,” said Alex Kantrowitz, author of the free, ad-supported newsletter Big Technology. (He previously covered the industry for Ad Age.) “And it’s why people hate advertising and ad companies.”

Years ago, pre-www days, I was a lowly graphic designer and copywriter. The more I educated myself on advertising content and how it’s utilized to manipulate consumers, the less comfortable I was with the field in general.

It became clear that if I wanted to be “successful” in that industry, it basically meant becoming a manipulative asshole who didn’t care about the rights of others. Definitely not what my parents taught me.

I decided my art would be my personal domain rather than my income. Not sorry at all; at least my conscience is clear.

As to the point of this article? I was creeped out when I first realized about tracking, and while it’s a losing battle, I opt out of tracking whenever I can. Not much faith in it really, but one does what one can.
