r/technology – NVIDIA cripples cryptocurrency mining on RTX 3080 and 3070 cards

Their target audience is getting marginalized right out of the market though. They want gamers. Gamers can’t buy graphics cards in the volumes the manufacturer wanted because they’re getting snatched up and applied for strict crypto-mining purposes.

They could change their target audience and cater to those crypto-miners. They tried to bridge both worlds by offering versions of some cards without video output, for example, but because of the chip shortages the regular video cards are being engulfed not just by cyrpto-miners but also by automated scripts/scalpers. So they’re being forced to either accept the market as-is, or push the market back to their original target audience.

Sometimes, you just can’t win.

(I’ll give NVidia kudos, too – they could easily go for the short-term massive gains and lock out gamers for awhile, but that would long-termp cripple them when the short supplies are resolved)
