r/technology – 280 million Americans have no control over their data. A national standard is the only way to fix it

The Ashley madison comment doesnt really work. Since someone can also break into my lawyers office and steal all his paper files.

This story is not about creating a perfect system, that doesnt have some of the same problems as everything before computers.

WE want to set up a system were data on corporate servers are just as private as those on paper. That does NOT mean they cant be robbed on occasion.. er hacked. That was the same in real life. Nothing about this debate has shit to do with that. WE want to make it so Ashley Madison, cant just sell your private data, LEGALLY to anyone they wanted.

As a general rule, if you don’t want it in tomorrow morning’s headlines, don’t put it online unencrypted.

that also isnt the problem. WE arent talking reddit and facebook posts.

We are talking things like what you bought on walmart and you know that little HTTPS in front of the site.. IT IS ENCRYPTED. It still get sold.. because walmart can legally sell it.

this isnt a discussion about hackers. its a discussion about regulating that entity on the other end of your encrypted communication, to say the data you are sharing with them ENCRYPTED, you have an expectation of privacy for.

That when i Buy anal sooth cream from walmart they cant legally sell that to everyone and my x-wife.. which right now, they can. That if i buy heart healthy vitamins just because i think its a good thing to start to use, that they dont sell that to my insurance company who now wants to raise my rates because they figure i started to use them becuase i noticed problems with my heart.

THIS HAS ZERO TO do with posting on facebook or reddit.

This has zero to do with the fact that no matter what locks we make, someone can crack that lock.(zero to do with hackers)

yes litterally due to hackers, you will never have 100% control but thats the same with everything in life since there are theives. It doesnt matter how rich you are, or how high your walls are, thats life and absolutely we arent not trying to make the net safer that real life.
